A Place of Peace and Belonging

The Abbey Church (the Orthodox Catholic Church of Christ the King) is a sacred space with a rich history and steeped in tradition. It is open to all who seek to know God more fully, to have a deeper spiritual understanding of our life’s journey, or are in need of comfort. We welcome people of all faiths and denominations to join with us in love, acceptance and friendship.

The church with its beautiful and historical medieval and Victorian stained glass windows is a place for deep contemplation, inner reflections and personal conversations with God. Set within charming gardens, the Abbey Church, Caboolture invites us to step aside from our busy lives for a short while to nurture the soul and refresh our spirits.

It is a place where visitors can experience a sense of peace, tranquillity and hospitality. We welcome all people wishing to attend our church services or wanting to know more about us, and we believe and acknowledge that all people are children of God, equally loved and valued by our Divine Creator.

While the Church’s heritage comes from both Orthodox and Catholic traditions, the Abbey Church also reflects the mystical understandings and revelations of its founder the Rev J.S.M. Ward. As such we seek to be a lighthouse in the world sharing God’s light, peace and love to all.

Sunday Services & Evening Meditation

Each Sunday the Abbey Church holds a Holy Communion Service at 9.30 am and an Evening Service with Meditation at 6.00 pm, to which all are welcome.

The Holy Communion Service, which uses a Western form of the Liturgy of St James the Apostle, includes hymns, prayers, a sermon and sacred and traditional rituals. This includes the consecration of the bread and wine as the body and blood of Christ, which is offered by the presiding bishop or priest to parishioners and to which all visitors to the church are invited to partake. Young children are invited at that time to also receive a blessing.

The service lasts about 60 to 90 minutes and is followed by a morning tea at the Abbey Hall to which all are welcome.

The Evening Service commences at 6.00 pm and lasts for about 30 to 45 minutes. This service includes hymns, prayers, a short inspirational talk and a meditation.

Weddings, Baptisms & Funerals

The Church clergy also performs Weddings, Baptisms, Funerals and Memorial services.

Weddings

The Abbey Church, with its dark wooden interior, exquisite historic stained glass windows and old worldly charm, is a special place to have a wedding. Chapel weddings are celebrated on selected Saturdays and officiated by our clergy, who are also registered marriage celebrants.

Baptisms

Baptisms, also known as christenings, are held for both babies and adults on a Sunday after the morning Holy Communion Service. The ceremony takes approximately 20 minutes, and parents are encouraged to nominate godparents for their child.

Funerals & Memorial Services

At one of the most difficult times in our lives, when we face the pain of our greatest loss, the Abbey Church offers a place of comfort and support. Our clergy conduct funeral and memorial services in the church, and also at funeral homes and other venues on request.

Six Centuries of Stained Glass

Coming into the Abbey Church in the late afternoon sun is like walking into a rainbow of colour. Probably nowhere else in Australia can a visitor walk into a church and find themselves surrounded by ancient medieval stained glass, that dates back over 650 years.

Visitors to the Abbey Church are often inspired by the beauty of our little church with its colourful medieval and Victorian stained glass panels, historic carvings and statues.

The Abbey Museum offers guided tours of the stained glass in the Abbey Church on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11.00 am, or for groups by appointment.

Everyone agreed Father George said the perfect amount, a lovely verse about love and not too lengthy of a ceremony either and sister Veronica made sure the church looked beautiful! Yes. The property has clear signage and on-site parking, and the church sits a short, well marked walk from the car park.

Will I be pressured to join or asked for money?

No. Attendance carries no obligation, and Sunday services and evening meditation are open to everyone at no charge. The morning tea at the Abbey Hall after the Sunday service is open to all, and there is nothing to sign up to.
